The Winchester Criterium Review

I think it is fair to say that the Winchester Criterium and was a roaring success! This was our first crack at the event and we couldn’t have been more pleased with it. With about 3,000 spectators, over 200 participants and about 40ish volunteers and marshalls it was a day to remember. The weather was also gorgeous and the bars and restaurants were full of public members eating, drinking and being merry!

We had kids who came from all over the country to participate and they didn’t disappoint by putting on some great racing. There was a great local contingent as well from VC Venta, Andover Wheelers and the Solent Pirates.

The Women’s race was won by Emma Grant of Matrix Fitness RA. She planned the race very well by sitting back behind the leaders and then came up the high street hard and fast to take the win by a few bike lengths. A similar race came in the 3rd Category with Steve Dance of Andover Wheelers losing the back wheel of the first two riders mid way through the race. On the last lap Andy found enough energy to power around the last corner to steam up behind the leaders and take the win in a highly dramatic fashion! The Elite race was won by Andy Hargroves of Felt Colborne Hargroves. It was a one sided race with Andy and Jody Crawforth taking the lead early on and after working well together it came down to who had the most energy in their legs for the sprint at the end. All of the race results can be found here.
