02-Aug-2010 - Winchester charity triathlon raises £10,000 for Macmillan

This year's Pedal Paddle Pace triathlon, supported by Cycle Tours UK, has raised more than £10,000 for the South Hampshire Macmillan Cancer Support.

A record 270 individual competitors and teams took part in the family charity event, which is held in the beautiful Itchen Valley in the heart of Winchester.

The cool weather provided perfect conditions for the 20km bike ride through Easton and Avington, with the first cyclists completing the course in a record 33 minutes taking some marshals by surprise with their rapid return.

The run through the meadows along the Itchen Valley saw the fastest competitors complete the course in less than 20 minutes. When the sun came out, the 2km kayak proved a great leveller with the fastest kayak completing the course in less than 14 minutes.

Defending men's champion Gavin Pugh managed to repeat his 2009 performance, completing all three events in an incredible one hour and 10 minutes, and Donna Tew was crowned 2010 lady's champion.

Cycle Tours UK owner and Winchester resident Christopher Dawson helped establish Pedal Paddle Pace in 2005 with the cancer charity and has helped secure it on the local activities calendar.

Christopher Dawson from Cycle Tours UK, which specialises in guided customised cycle tours, said: "Cycle Tours UK is proud to support Pedal Paddle Pace and would like to congratulate all that took part to raise money for such a worthy local charity.
