24-Jul-2011 - Pedal Paddle Pace 2011

The Pedal Paddle Pace event was successfully held this year on Sunday July 24th. With over 230 competitors of all levels of ability, the warm sunshine and some amazing performances it made for a great day. The event has generated some £15,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and well done to all who competed and helped on the day. Please go to the PPP site on http://www.winchesterppp.co.uk  to see the results and some images of the event.

This year the cycling started at the Guildhall with a send off by the Mayor. The initial climb out over St Giles Hill tests all involved but the ride through Easton and Avington makes for a pleasant cycle. The bike ride finishes back at base at the Kingsgate Tennis Club where the competitors change into running gear to do the 5km course through the beautiful Itchen River valley. The final leg is a 1.5km kayak on the Itchen canal which gives a welcome rest to the leg muscles but does test the arms and mental capabilities.

The fastest competitor this year wasSam Westhead who completed all three legs in just over an hour. The event though is not about pure competitiveness and all participants get the same satisfaction no matter what time they do each leg in. A special thanks must go to Rob Williams and all the team who organised the event again this year. Great job and here's looking forward to 2012.
